We loved Moana so much that we splurged and bought it! While we were watching it this afternoon, I realized that the movie's theme is knowing who you are.
The whole movie is about Moana figuring out who she is, as she helps Maui figure out who he is, and culminates in reminding Tifiti who she is. Meanwhile the grandma is also teaching lessons of knowing who you are and being true to yourself. I love this theme. At the climax of the movie, Moana sings: Who am I? I am a girl who loves my island I'm the girl who loves the sea It calls me I am the daughter of the village chief We are descended from voyagers Who found their way across the world They call me I've delivered us to where we are I have journeyed farther I am everything I've learned and more Still it calls me... I am Moana! And it left me thinking, who am I? I am a child of God. Growing up in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, I have always had it instilled in me that I am a beloved child of Heavenly Father. I sang songs about it as a child, and as an adult I still know it to be true. I am a wife. I am so thankful to be in a happy marriage with my wonderful husband. He takes such good care of me, and I love taking care of him. He makes me better, and I love him more every day. I am a daughter and a sister. I was blessed with wonderful parents and siblings who have helped shape me into who I am. I am proud to be made up of half my mom and half my dad, and to share their traits. I am proud to be a little sister to my four older brothers, who I will always look up to. I am descended from pioneers. My mother's ancestors were some of the Mormon Pioneers who crossed the plains to settle in Utah, and my grandma on my dad's side was a pioneer herself, in that she was the first of her family to join the Mormon Church. I come from a line of faith, and I hope to make my ancestors proud. I am a teacher. For my job, I help teach high school students math. I mostly teach one-on-one, which is my favorite. I love teaching, I love getting to know the kids individually, and I love when I can see a concept click for them. I am a homemaker. I love creating a home. I love making my home a comfortable, beautiful refuge from the outside world. I love to cook dinner, I love to tidy up the house, and sometimes I don't mind doing the dishes. ;) And most of all, I am a believer. I believe that Jesus Christ is my Savior and Redeemer, and that through Him I can become everything I want to be and more. Who are you?
